CHENNAI: This is the sketch of the man who is charged with the rape of a 12-year-old girl, the murder of her 10-year-old brother in Nagapattinam and  the attempt to murder their sister. The CB-CID prepared the sketch after speaking to the two children who survived after the man slit their throats with a sickle. The man has been absconding since October 4, 2002, the day of the crime.

The CB-CID, which took up investigation of the case on November 5 this year following an order from the Madras high court, said the man was working as a mason in the victims’ house. A CB-CID team received an intelligence input that the man has been living in Chennai after he fled Nagapattinam. According to officials, Kumar alias Left Kumar alias Jeya Kumar (30), a resident of Vaitheswaran Koil, Nagapattinam, went to the house of Ganga, Sutha and Venkateshan (names changed), when their parents were away at work on Oct 4, 2002. He told the children that he had left his tools inside the house and wanted them.

He then went inside the house and tied 10-year-old Venkateshan and 12-year old Sutha with a saree and then raped Ganga. He then slit the throats of the children using a sickle. Venkateshan died on the spot. The other two survived after prolonged treatment.

Sirkali police registered a case and tried to hunt down the accused, but did not succeed. The children’s parents approached the Madras high court for a CB-CID investigation and the court ruled in their favour. “We talked to the victims and they easily identified the accused as he was known to them. Kumar used to work as a mason in their house and he used that familiarity to commit the crime. We prepared a sketch of the accused according to the description provided by the children. The accused has a black mole on his left chin,” a CB-CID official told TOI.
